Reasons I'm going to miss working with Russ...
- His discerning eye & flamboyant descriptive adjectives for the ladies.
- The laughs & amazing stories about his years in the business.
- The occasional drama.
- The late night pasta dinners.
- The time spent together as co-workers, friends and brothers.
I'm going to miss you brother, peace, prosperity & happiness to you and Pauline always. - Lainer.

Well Russell, you snuck away without even saying goodbye...and after everything we've done for you!! ;) Anyway, you will always be a legend in your own right. I am not really quite sure what we are going to do with ourselves now. (Perhaps we will have to make that trip out to Watson afterall...) Best wishes to you and Pauline. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love always, Mark + Jill.

Hi Russell,
You may not remember me, but we lived in the same building on 112 Street about 10 years ago. What I have rembered about you throughout the years is your complete love of cats - I gave you a couple of cat beds to try out on your new addition.
Being overly fond of cats myself, I felt a true affinity to your natural gentleness.
I also remember your sadness and search to find a foothold. I am happy that you have found serenity and love - may they travel with you always.

Russell,

You don't know me, I am just one of the many people your smiling face greeted and welcomed into the Hardware Grill. I would like to thank you for your smiling face, kind words and always exceptional service in your job. You are the bar for service in Edmonton and the Hardware Grill will be a different place without you. I hope that you enjoy your retirement life to the fullest!

Sincerely

Russell, my husband and I just two of the thousands of happy customers you have served over the years. Married 36 years (and counting!), we have been celebrating our wedding anniversary on December 21 by going out to dinner at the Hardware Grill (and before that at Jack's) for many years now. You were always our waiter. We looked forward to the meal not only for what it celebrated but also for your attentive, kind, knowledgeable and, yes, charming, service. Last December you weren't there and we missed you. I was very sorry to read that you have been so ill and send our deepest wishes for a long and happy life in retirement. We'll be drinking a special toast on December 21 to your continuing health and happiness.

Hi Russ,

Don Archbold here. I recently moved back to Edmononton and the last time I spoke with Freddy he told me you were still in Edmonton, but it appears you're now off to Saskatchewan (I've already done my time there) and I certainly wish you all the best. By the way, I still quote a funny comment you made years ago upon your return from Australia 'the guys there all surf until their 20, then they become brick layers'. It still gets a laugh everytime.

Take care,
Don

Rusty,
Maybe a long time since you've used that moniker - but back in Veg growing up that is who you were, and who I remember you as! I want you to know that as just one of your "old" friends from way back, I am so pleased to know that you are so well regarded for your personable spirit and friendliness. It is good to retire from a position that you were good at, and one that made you memorable in people's minds. My best to you as you fight your illness with a loving wife at your side. Know that I will be with you in spirit, as will all your many friends and acquaintances.

There are a lot of great restaurants in Edmonton: there is but one Russell Frame.

Food is only part of the dining experience. Knowledgeable service by someone who genuinely cares about a customer makes the balance of an evening out.

Russell, whether it was a birthday, an anniversary, entertaining special guests or no occasion at all, it was you that made every effort to make it a memorable experience. You treat total strangers like treasured friends.

Nancy, Lauren, Jared, Mackenzie and I wish you and Pauline the best in retirement. When you come to Washington DC, let me reciprocate your hospitality.

The meaning of BROTHERHOOD.

The dictionary says many things but one of the many says....an association or community of people linked to a common interest. I have known Rusty since I was a kid and his love and compassion would always light up my world whenever we met. As my mentor in brotherhood training and living through the many decades we have seen he taught me to be charming and consistient in the delivery of the message "Hey Brother!" I intend to continue the tradition that was started by my dear friend years ago and will be passed on to my sons to carry on. Are you feeling me!

Hey Rusty
I just read in the journal that you have dicided to retire to Sask, and I must say you will leave a void here in Edmonton. It was such a surprise to meet you at the Hardware Grill upon my return to Edmonton in 03. It had to be more then 40 years since we laced up or skates for a game. I'm sure you as well as me look back at the old area where we grew up and for the most part are not too proud of some of the things we did as kids, but we can take pride in the fact that we did take the right road. Sharon and I wish you and your wife the very best in your new adventure, and you still owe me a golf game that you promised the last time we talked.
Keep in touch.

Russell, it's Rob Kaczanowski. I used to bartend at Earl's Tin Palace on Jasper Ave back in 1992. You had just moved back to Edmonton at the time. You frequented my Oyster Bar throughout the summer. I can still here your voice after all these years. It was a busy summer in 1992. I remember being absorbed in the chaos of the Tin Palace Lounge. To escape it all, I would saunter back down to the quiet south-end of the bar to chat with you. You sat relaxed and were always smiling and never demanding. And yes, you called me Brother too. When the summer ended, I went off to school overseas (Sweden), then moved to Calgary, and never saw you again.

I just received an email this morning from a friend of mine in Edmonton. The email had a copy of the Edmonton Journal article and the link to your blog. The email was vague and said "Thought you might be interested in this". I wasn't sure what the article was about or who it was focussed on. As I began reading it I felt a bit of a chill. It started to sound familiar. I wasn't sure how my friend in Edmonton knew to forward the article to me. How did he know you? How did he know that I knew you? I then realized that my friend and I had eaten dinner on New Years eve at the Hardware Grill in Edmonton in 2001. While eating, we looked up and saw you running around the restaurant in full form doing what you do best. It had been 9 years since I last seen you at my Oyster Bar. I pulled you aside, introduced you to my friend, and we reminisced about the Oyster Bar at Earls. As I left the restaurant that night, I said "I hope I see you again Russell - maybe in another 9 years!"

My friend in Edmonton had read the article and instantly remembered his brief introduction to you 7 years ago. Just as I remember my brief but meaningful introduction to you 16 years ago. Few people are able to make the impression that you have made Russell.

All the best Brother. And I still hope I see you again.

Rob Kaczanowski

Living south of Camrose we haven't made time to get to the Grill for a number of years. What we do remember is how well you always took care of us and our guests. You were a professional in the best sense of the word, educating, guiding and entertaining while accepting dietary quirks and needs. Often when we left we talked more of our time with you than the meal itself. We wish you and your partner strength, joy and peace in this next leg of your life journey. Thank you for being the life force you are.

Hello Russ, Whatis all this? What's all the fuss about? Don't think for a minute I don't know what all the fuss is about. When I'm in Vancouver and I hear "Russ Frame is probably the best waiter in Edmonton" you gotta know that's HUGE!
Well Russ, all the best and if I could only leave you with one thought, it's this...9 and 1 is 10 and ten is twenty...well, I think you know the rest! Take care Rooster

Dear Russell,

I just read Scott McKeen's column from August 13. I didn't realize that you haven't been well - thought you and Pauline were just taking an extended winter in Mexico.

I want you to know how special you have been in my life - every visit to the Hardware Grill (and to Jack's Grill before that) was turned into a memorable evening by having you as our waiter. I always looked forward to a chat and to catching up with what was new in your life. You have a talent and a flair that I have never seen duplicated. All of Scott's comments are true - you always made every one of your customers feel uniquely special.

I wish you and Pauline the very best in your move to my home province, and I have every confidence that the beauty and peace of the prairies will bring you happiness and serenity.

I will miss you.

In friendship,
Faye Parker

Dearest Russell and Pauline,
I have missed seeing you at the City Market and will continue to miss you. It has been years now that Russell has walked by (orange puffy jacket in the winter) and waved and said hi to Lola, big smile. It's also where I first saw Pauline's beautful canvases. I have the card of her painting of the market on the wall above my desk. It's so colourful and full of life, the market exactly. I'll think of you in your cosy house in peaceful Watson and wish sweetness upon sweetness upon you.

Hi Russell:
You have a special and permanent place in my heart!
We first met at the HG a few years ago when my sister Kathy, her husband Doug, and I stopped in for a quick dinner.
Kathy had terminal brain cancer and despite her illness, she was immediately enamoured with you. No surprise there, and you in your inimitable style, were just yourself.
Doug and I watched with amusement and appreciation as you and her connected in conversation and flirtation…and for a couple of hours, we forgot how sick she was.
Even after her mind was no longer clear, she frequently spoke about you and our dinner. So much so, that I contacted you to tell you about the impact you had on her, and of course us.
She would light up whenever I mentioned your name, and that you had inquired about her, sending your regards, etc. Those moments have become lasting memories for me; thank you.

Love to you and Pauline,

Victoria S. Pritchard

Russ, it seems like a very long time since we last spent time together in Edmonton, at least 35 years I guess. I wanted to let you know that I am on the same journey you are on, only my sanctuary is at Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. Dave Sorochan shared your story with me and I was touched by how your taking things in stride, the way I always remember you doing. I know that you will do very well in the future and that, like me, for however long that is you will enjoy every day. I met a Texas Farmer down in Houston at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre that shared a simple but important thought with me. He told me that every morning, if your eyes open and your feet hit the ground, its a good day. Almost every day since that chance meeting has been a good day for me. I sense that you are having many good days yourself.

Dave Sorochan, Gil Mercier and I tried to get Fred out for a lunch a few months ago, but his schedule didn't permit. I will seek him out again soon, just to catch up after so many years.

Take care Russ, and if you want to get in touch, I would love to catch up.

Russell,
Whenever Scott & I had the opportunity to get out without our kids, it was never a question of where we wanted to go. The Hardware grill of course, but not only because of the food, atmosphere, etc.... but mainly because we knew we would have the best service, & an enjoyable visit with you!
We have celebrated our wedding anniversary many times and have brought friends to share a night out, knowing that we would enjoy your charming, knowledgeable, & attentive service. We have traveled the world, eaten at many a fine establishment, but have never have had a server as wonderful as you!
The last couple of times we were out, you weren't there and we missed you. We are very sorry to hear of your health struggles, but will be keeping you close in our thoughts for better days ahead! Enjoy your new home, the golf games, & each great drive! next time your in Edmonton, come out to the course for a round with us!
We will miss you, & your beautiful smile!

Russell: I haven't been to the Hardware Grill in some time and, like many others, read the latest about you in Scott's column. It was quite a tribute to you as a professional and as a person. I took some time and read the many posts on the Hardware Grill website. It must be gratifying indeed to know how many lives you have touched. The message that emanates is clear and unequivocal and one that I am happy to summarize --- Russell, you're a class act! Edmonton's loss is Saskatchewan's gain. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your wife as you as you face the challenges ahead. Here's hoping you are able to experience a lengthy retirement with the same kind of happiness and joy you brought to so many others for so many many years. Au revoir et bon chance mon ami. A la prochaine fois,
Ivan I

Hey Rusty!!!
Where have all the years and people gone? Hanging out at Walt's Table Supply and Smitty's in the sixties doesn't seem like that long ago brother. We always seemed destined to cross each others paths throughout life, sometimes in the least likely places. I remember driving through a blinding snowstorm near Ft.Saskatchewan in the wee hours only to find you hitching by the side of the road!! I will always look fondly on our times together. I did get your phone message but was unable to call you back due to my own medical crisis. I suffered a major heart attack in Jan.04. Survival was touch and go with 2 major by-pass operations. I have never recovered fully from the ordeal and am now semi-retired. I would like to keep in touch. Drop me a line barbdean.thompson@gmail.com

We always felt you were part of the family when we dined together on special nights out. And we will miss you much more than you can imagine, as will all your devoted following at Jack's and the H.G. Because it wasn't so much the great food we came for. It was in anticipation of seeing you again and knowing that you would take such good care of us with your ready smile and genuine warmth. All the fun, laughter and many good memories we shared together, we owe to you. It just won't be the same on all our special occasions without you there to welcome us back. Hi --- just read the article about you on this site, and have to say it is too bad that you are not around the Hardware Grill to teach newcomers how to treat the customers. Last night was my first visit to the Grill, and if I go by my experience with the waiter we had, it will be my last. He did not make me feel welcome, or comfortable at all. In fact, I found him rude, arrogant and condesending to say the least. Now, maybe it was just me, not understanding his 'sense of humour' if that is what one would call it... but when I have relayed my experience to others, they all agree with my assessment. From the start, when asking if he could bring us something to drink, (I don't drink much, but do enjoy dacquaries.. so asked about them)and being told that the "blended or fruity drinks are not available, that we are not that kind of place" to the end, when having dessert, he stopped by to see how it was going, and my husband was still working on his, as was I, he made a comment to my husbands response that yes, he was still working on it, to the effect that "well, if not, I am sure you (meaning me) will finish it", which made me feel like he thought of me as a pig, hog, glutton... that would clean up my husbands plate. I was very upset after dinner, and my husband knew something was wrong, but I am a lady, and don't like to make a scene in the restaurant. On the way home, after hearing of my feelings, my husband wished I would have said something, as he then would not have left the tip that he did.
So, even though I have never met you, or been waited on by you, I am sure you will be missed in this industry... truly is hard to find good help! Best of luck to you in the future!!!
